Ploidy video tutorial
This 10minutes video walks students through the concepts of chromosome number, ploidy and sister chromatids and how they change (or don't) as a result of DNA replication.
Pre-requisite Knowledge
- None (students should be encouraged to make a list of questions they have about the video and ask them in class)
Learning Objectives
- 1. Describe and illustrate (using standard models and representations) homologous chromosomes at the microscopic/chromosomal level.
- 2. Given a suitable picture or diagram of a eukaryotic cells’ chromosomes, identify the ploidy, total number of chromosomes and (if applicable) groups of homologous chromosomes.
- 3. Given information about the ploidy and chromosome number of a eukaryotic cell, describe how this cell’s ploidy, chromosome number, and chromosome structure (sister chromatids or “single chromatids”)changes as a result of DNA replication (G1 vs. G2).
